Employee Voice: The Missing Piece in Organizational Communication

Employee voice has emerged as a crucial element of successful employee relations at a period where trust, creativity, and agility are become crucial factors. Employee voice describes how staff members express their thoughts, recommendations, and worries over matters pertaining to the workplace. Even though this term is discussed widely in theoretically, practically most of the organizations still fail to give higher strategic weight on it.

employee voice as well as how workplace culture is influenced by its existence or lack thereof.

What Is Employee Voice?

According to the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD, 2016a), Employee voice is "the means by which employees communicate their views on employment and organizational issues to their employers,"

For employers, having a strong voice promotes creativity, productivity, trust with workers, and organizational development. Employees who express themselves vocally frequently feel appreciated, have higher job satisfaction, have more influence, and have better chances for their carrier developments. In order to create inclusive workplaces, employee voice is also crucial.

Employee voice can be raised in two mechanisms,

1.       Direct voice (Upward Problem Solving)

2.       Representative Voice

 

v  Direct voice (Upward Problem Solving)

In this mechanism employees are able to express their ideas, suggestions, opinions and concerns to the management of the organization directly with out any involvement of third parties like union representatives or employee committees. In upward problem-solving method employees have real time opportunity to give their feedback and ideas to the management. Below are some instances where employees are able to raise their voice directly.

·         Suggestion schemes

·         Anonymous surveys

·         Town hall meetings

·         Digital platforms (e.g. Slack, MS Teams feedback forms)

·         One-on-one meetings

 

v  Representative Participation

Communicating with management as a group of representatives selected by the workforce of the organization is known as representative participation. This method is more practical in large scale organizations where direct involvement of all employees is not possible. Below methods can be considered as common mechanisms of Representative Participation.

            ·         Works councils

            ·         Joint consultation committees

            ·         Union representation

            ·         European Works Councils in multinational firms


Importance of Employee voice

“Employee voice” empowers its employees the ability to make significant contributions and give them a sense of respect and value. Additionally, it strengthens psychological safety where employees feels that they can express their ideas without the fear of punishments. It may lead for,

·         Increase in employee engagement

·         Increase in job satisfaction

·         Increase the performance ratings

·         Strengthen the trust between the employer and employee

·         Reduce labour turnover


Conclusion

Employee voice is not just a means of providing feedback, but it serves as the foundation of engagement, respect for one another, and organizational resiliency. During uncertain times listening has become more strategic than just an ethical thing. By empowering employee voice, companies give opportunities for innovations, teamwork and loyalty with in the organization. The time has come to stop discussing employee voice and to begin creating environments that truly listen.
